‘Man with two voices’ Marcelito Pomoy lands third runner-up on ‘America’s Got Talent’

Filipino power crooner  Marcelito Pomoy — whose near-superhuman range enables him to perform duets in both a man’s and a woman’s register — was declared the third runner-up on the hit reality show competition America’s Got Talent: The Champions on Tuesday (Manila time).

All four of the show’s judges — Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Alesha Dixon, and Howie Mandel — gave Pomoy a standing ovation after host Terry Crews announced the singer was leaving the competition.

The crowd, meanwhile, let out an audible murmur of disappointment over Pomoy not nabbing the top spot.

Still, the speechless 35-year old was smiling throughout. His wife joined him on the stage to thank fans, and said that the experience had been a great opportunity for the vocal powerhouse, best-known locally for his dual-voiced rendition of Josh Groban’s The Prayer and his album Duet Yourself. He was also the grand champion of the U.S. show’s local edition, Pilipinas Got Talent, in 2011.

Young violinist Tyler Butler-Figueroa and trapeze act Duo Transcend finished second and first runners-up, respectively. Mumbai based dance group V. Unbeatable was the grand champion.

Pomoy made it to the U.S. talent show’s finals just over two weeks ago after he impressed all four judges with Andrea Bocelli’s Con te partirò. For his final performance, the singer performed — by himself, naturally — both parts of Beauty and the Beast in the style of the original duet by Peabo Bryson and Celine Dion. Three of the judges gave him a standing ovation, but not Cowell, who despite praising the performance, said it was “predictable.”

“Marcelito, I love you so much,” Klum told Pomoy on his elimination day. “You have such a beautiful voice — or, actually, I should say the most beautiful voices — inside of you. You are a champion, and I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.”

Well, champ, you did your best. We love you too. Cheers.
