In the Philippines, politics and show business are often intertwined, as seen in this new issue between actress and former First Daughter Kris Aquino and senatorial candidate Christopher “Bong” Go.
Yesterday, Aquino slammed Go, President Rodrigo Duterte’s long-time assistant, for joking that her ex-partner, action star Phillip Salvador, fooled her in the past.
Kris shared her displeasure by posting a video of Go on her Instagram account.
In the video Go is delivering a speech in an unidentified location where he said: “I’m always with Ipe (Salvador) because he’s a friend of the President and me. When you do something good in a city, he becomes an adopted son of that city. But Ipe was given a unique recognition. He’s the ‘adopted father of Davao City’ because he left four children in Davao.”
As the crowd laughed, Go turned to his right and presumably spoke with Salvador who was off camera: “It’s true. You even fooled Kris Aquino.”
Salvador is known as an ardent Duterte supporter and has even played him in a television drama that depicted Go’s life. He also happens to be Kris’ ex-partner and the father of her eldest son, Joshua Aquino.
In her caption, Kris said she was “deeply hurt” after someone showed her Go’s video when she was overseas. She added that she has already reached out to Go about the video.
She wrote: “I had a black eye on Friday, was hit on the jaw Tuesday, and then I saw again that I was used as a punchline at a campaign sortie where I was laughed at [by people] because I was ‘fooled.'”
Kris was likely referring to the dismissal of her qualified theft complaints against her former business associate, Nicko Falcis. On Friday, the Makati City Prosecutors’ Office dismissed her complaint due to lack of evidence. The media reported yesterday that Pasig City prosecutors also dismissed her complaint because of the same reason.
She alleged that Falcis used her company’s credit card for personal purchases. For his part, Falcis is suing her for grave threats.
Kris addressed Go in the post and told him she had done nothing wrong to him. “I hope that when you serve as a senator (I know that you are a sure winner), women are your priority. I’m already a Kris Aquino but it was easy for you to joke that I was ‘fooled’ by the father of my eldest son. I work and my family takes care of me. But what about the women without financial security and family?”
It may just be a social media post, but Kris’ views on politics are quite influential.
Kris comes from an influential political family. Her mother is the late President Corazon Aquino while her father is the late national hero Ninoy Aquino. She’s also the younger sister of former President Noynoy Aquino and the cousin of Senator Bam Aquino, who is running for re-election.
Bam said Kris is supporting his re-election, which he said is a big deal, given her stature. Kris is a sought after brand endorser. She was, for most of her career, referred to as the Philippines’ Queen of All Media and has even appeared in the Hollywood film Crazy Rich Asians.
While Bam and Noynoy are members of the opposition party, Kris is known for being friendly to Duterte and Go. In June last year, Go even apologized to Kris when then-Presidential Communications Operations Office Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson compared Duterte’s controversial kiss with an OFW in Seoul to the kiss given by Ninoy to a supporter when he was still alive.
Before he apologized, Kris even promised to Go that she would campaign for him, though it appears that she hasn’t.
Kris’ fans are understandably upset by Go’s joke.
Wrote one: “This is too much! Too much! What a different time we live in, you were fooled and hurt and people would even make fun of you. They’re even using you for their useless jokes.”
Another netizen said: “Don’t vote for him (Go). He’s not very nice.”
Another netizen called Go “mean.” She added: “They have no heart and respect for women.”
Another attacked Go and said he’s not a good person. “Not educated. Rude! People should not vote for him. No, no, no for this kind of person.”
While Kris’ fans do not plan to vote for Go, it looks like many plan to. A recent survey showed that he is on the 6th-12th place to earn one of the Senate’s 12 available seats in the May 13 elections. His candidacy has not been without controversies, however, because critics have accused him of early campaigning.
