A shake for every occassion at Shakeaway

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Shakeaway, the famous milkshake bar from the United Kingdom has now arrived in Manila. It opened its first branch in UP Town Center in Nov 2016.

On the store’s counter is a display of 180 ingredients which can be mixed and matched to create one-of-a-kind concoctions. Krispy Kreme, Oreo, and Lindt shake, anyone?

For those who don’t want to turn ordering a milkshake into a cerebral chore, Shakeaway offers tried and tested recipes, too. “Dave” (Ferrero Rocher, Kinder Bueno and a Cadbury flake) is a pretty popular pick. “Joe” (local ube, sweet macapuno, and pinipig) is an exclusive Philippine flavor meant to showcase the traditional flavors of the country. There are 13 named shakes on the menu, with the regular size at PHP250 and the large size at PHP310.

We’re not kidding when we say there is a milkshake for every occasion in this place.

The “Wicked Wendy” is tagged as the worst milkshake in the world. It is made from frozen peas, pickled onions, and whipped cream. Students in the UK usually order it on a dare or as a form of punishment. Coconuts Manila is the first to try the Wicked Wendy in the Philippines because no one has ever dared order it yet.

It isn’t as bad at it sounds. It actually tastes like cold soup. The pickled onion bits are easy to identify because of their texture. You probably won’t enjoy it, but it’s pretty drinkable.

If you’ve ever wondered what gold tastes like, a PHP900 special shake called the Millionaire’s Milkshake is literally sprinkled with 23 karat gold flakes on top. It is usually ordered by customers on special occasions such as birthdays. As of writing, only nine people have ordered the Millionaire’s milkshake in Manila. They all got certificates with their drink to make the experience official.

The most interesting item in the store is the limited edition hot milkshake. No, it’s not like hot cocoa. It’s thicker and richer than typical hot drinks. The “Toasty Tim” (choco chip cookie, chocolate muffin, milk chocolate chips) is heavy enough to be a meal replacement. Most of the flavors are chocolate-based but there’s also one with matcha.

Shakeaway also offers healthier options like smoothies, shakes (with the option to add protein powder!) and shaved ice.

Suggestion: when you are going to a place like this, it’s best to just forget your diet and go with your heart’s desire. Go craft a shake that will make you feel like a kid again. If you’re really worried calorie count, then grab a friend and share a cup.
