6 things hardcore Star Wars fans can do in Metro Manila this Christmas

Move over, Christmas. The world seems more excited by Star Wars: The Force Awakens coming out. On this side of the planet, people are ignoring typhoons and braving gargantuan traffic just to catch it in the cinemas. There are other things you can do to lengthen the Star Wars euphoria in your system, however. May the force be with you.

1. See a Star Wars diorama made of Lego

Every December, Manila Bulletin sets up its cavernous ground-floor lobby with a themed Christmas display. This year in place of a traditional Christas village is a Star Wars village, all meticulously made with Lego pieces. X-wing Starfighters, Battle Tanks, Droids, Storm Troopers, At-At Walkers, and of course, the Millennium Falcon — we didn’t realize how cool they would all look as Lego figures. Everything is made to scale, making the scene all the more realistic. The lighting design makes it seem like you’re right in the middle of the rebellion..as a giant. The best part? It’s open to the public for free! The exhibit will be up until after New Year’s Day. Manila Bulletin, Muralla cor. Recolletos Streets, Intramuros, Manila. +63 2 5278121. Mon-Fri 8am-7pm.

2. Sit inside a T-70 X-Wing Fighter

No need to wonder how it would feel like flying an X-Wing starfighter — there’s one parked in the middle of the main hall of the Atrium in SM Mall of Asia, on the ground floor right in front of Muji. The X-Wing is open so you can actually sit inside and make like a Resistance fighter. It’s set against a portrait of the real thing, proving that they didn’t scrimp on the size of this model. A short backgrounder on the X-Wing is displayed right beside it for the benefit of amateur Star Wars fans. G/F SM Mall of Asia, J.W. Diokno Boulevard, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay. +63 2 5560680. 3. Get Star Wars art reproductions

Head over to the cinema level of BGC Central for some Star Wars art. These pieces of artwork — on display until Dec 20th — were created by Rodel Gonzalez, the only Filipino authorized to make interpretative art for Disney and Star Wars. Gonzalez’s Star Wars paintings are so realistic that (1) George Lucis bought some of them and (2) several others were put on disyplay at the San Diego Comic Con. More recently, Gonzalez’s painting of a Storm Trooper came out on the cover of the December issue of Austin’s Rock Star magazine. At his exhibit in BGC Central, you can buy reproductions of his work; a perfect Christmas present for the Star Wars fan in your squad. 3/F BGC Central 5th Avenue cor 30th Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. +63 2 8560523.

4. Find your musical Star Wars match

Do this: go to www.spotify-starwars.com, log on to your Spotify account, and find out which character shares your musical taste. All the Star Wars characters from the past and the present, regardless of political affiliation, apparently listen to music on their downtime. Could Darth Vader be your musical match? Obi-Wan Kenobi? An insider’s hint: if you listen to a load of ’80s heavy metal, you may or may not get Chewbacca as a match.

5. Immerse in cosplayer fun

GeekFight and Deus ex Machina, two groups of cosplayers, are hosting a block screening of The Force Awakens on Dec 19 in Greenbelt 3 during the last full show. Why? Because they absolutely need to watch A Force Awakens in costume. While tickets are already sold out for the screening, we say there’s no reason not to join the fun. Go to Greenbelt, fan that flame and see your brethern in cosplay. Snag a photo with them, for good measure. 3/F Greenbelt 3, Esperanza Street, Ayala Center, Makati. +63 2 7297777. 6. Celebrate Leinil Yu’s appointment as Star Wars Comics new penciller

On Saturday, Marvel Comics is launching Star Wars: Annual #1, a Star Wars comic pencilled by none other than Filipino artist Leinil Yu. Togethe with writer Jason Aaron, Yu will take over the artistic reins of the Star Wars comics starting with issue 16. On Saturday, he will have a meet and greet with fans at a mini-comicon in Greenhills. Apart from the autograph signing event, there will be toy exhibits, cosplay, and X-Wing miniature games. 2pm. G/F Promenade, Greenhills Shopping Center, San Juan.
