Worry among netizens as article indicates ‘massive data breach’, MCMC to issue statement

Malaysian netizens are on high alert after an article sharing information regarding a massive data was shared on the public message-board platform lowyat.net.

Reports via theSun confirm that government cybersecurity chief executive officer Datuk Amirudin Abdul Wahab is aware of the article.

“We are aware of the existence of the article mentioned and I think the authorities will issue a media statement tomorrow on the matter,” he said via text message, neither confirming nor denying the report.

Appearing yesterday on lowyat.net, an article entitled Personal Data of Millions of Malaysians Up for Sale, Sources of Breach Still Unknown reported that personal information from popular sites including jobstreet.com, the Malaysian Medical Council, the Malaysian Medical Association, the Academy of Medicine Malaysia, Malaysian Housing Loan Applications, the Malaysian Dental Association and the National Specialist Register of Malaysia were all up for sale for an undisclosed amount in bitcoin.

The platform also included the claims that telcos were involved in the data breach, and customers of Altel, Celcom, Digi, Enabling Asia, Friendimobile, Maxis, MercahantTradeAsia, PLDT, RedTone, TuneTalk, Umobile and XOX could also be affected.

By late evening the article had been pulled down, and in its place, was a note from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that they would be issuing an official statement on the matter.

We’ll keep you posted. Meanwhile, maybe start thinking of some new passwords.
