Valentine’s Jibby: Thief? Only of hearts, he tells crowd at Tesco appearance

Looks like former Prime Minister Najib Razak got the memo that we peasants shop at Tesco hypermarkets a lot more than the luxury food emporium Mercato, and wouldn’t you know it — the disgraced former PM decided to pop into Semenyih’s Tesco last night to the delight of shoppers.

Wearing his latest “Bossku” merch, a black hoodie bearing his likeness, our very own political hypebeast (sorry, KJ) mingled with a crowd that seemed unperturbed by the fact that their checkout lines just got a lot longer.

Taking to his Facebook page to chronicle the whole encounter, he wondered where the crowds came from, seeing as he was only popping in to buy a few things.

Oh, Najib! You’re a long way from home, and if 2010s “celebrity” culture has taught us anything — it’s that the paparazzi and “fans” tend to appear when you call them to say where you are. IDK — double check that one with Kris Jenner.

Semenyih is set to become an important seat in the parliamentary crown. After the death of the area’s Pakatan Harapan assemblyman earlier this year, a by-election is set to take place in coming weeks, that will give Najib’s Barisan Nasional party the chance to usurp the swivel chair, so to speak.

Responding to allegations from the PKR’s deputy president, Azmin Ali, that Najib was a thief, the former PM remained unfazed and told onlookers: “I am a thief who steals people’s hearts.”

While awaiting trial on the 42 charges that have piled up against him, Najib is trying desperately to shift the popular public perception of him from the silver-spooned husband of a luxury handbag hoarder to man of the people. The kind of guy who might ride a Yamaha bike, release a catchy single, shop for his own groceries, one who loves nothing more than trolling his foes on social media. Y’know, like the kids.

It’s a laughable effort from where we sit, yet he has managed to endear himself to thousands of social media followers who leave messages of support and share his exploits to their own accounts.

Only time will tell if this man-of-the-people shtick will help him with the dozens of criminal charges he’s facing, but one thing is certain — keeping his luxury-loving Birkin bag totting wife far from the public eye is certainly proving a smart play.
