An American man has been sentenced to death by hanging by Malaysian courts after he was found guilty of murdering his ex-wife in a Kuala Lumpur hotel room.

Sixty-three-year-old Gerald Wayne Mickelson will now appeal the conviction, in relation to the November 2016 claiming that he acted in self-defence against his estranged wife, Guilda Mickelson.

Newly married to a Filipino woman, Mickelson hoped to leave his engineering consultancy job in Malaysia and move to the Philippines with her. His lawyer alleges that an argument ensued between Guilda and her ex-husband, and she attacked him.

Post-mortem findings conclude that the victim died of a fatal compression to the neck, and sustained head injuries in the fracas.

However, the suspect’s lawyer maintains that his client did not run away, and instead called the hotel management.

Witnesses at the trial report that Mickelson cried upon hearing the ruling, and was consoled by his Filipino wife.
