Malaysia’s Jeram MP Mohd Shaid Rosli is hunting for a specific RM1 (US$0.24) note, and said that he will pay up to RM3,000 for one that looks “really pretty.”
“Please take a look at your RM1 notes. If you have one that has the same signature as the one in the photo, I will buy it for RM1,000. If it’s in good condition, I will buy it for RM2,000. If it’s really pretty, like in the photo, I will buy it for RM3,000,” the 38-year-old Pejuang politician wrote on Facebook yesterday.
The parliamentarian representing the constituency in Selangor was looking for a note imprinted with the signature of the late Ali Abul Hassan Sulaiman, who was the governor of Malaysia’s central bank from 1998 to 2000. He was succeeded by the first female bank governor Zeti Aziz, who held the position until 2016.
Malaysia stopped printing notes with Ali’s signature in 2000, replacing them with those signed by Zeti. More than 20 years later, the former version has become a rare find. None of the 300 people who responded to Shaid on Facebook had the note, they said.
One jokingly suggested that Shaid was sounding like a scammer.
“Just kidding, don’t be angry sir,” the Facebook user named El Wanie Fudz said.
