A man who had been wanted by U.S. authorities for allegedly raping a minor has been detained in Kepong, Malaysia, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI.

Seattle native Scott Barry Uchida, 38, was being investigated for second-degree rape, second-degree rape of a child, promoting commercial sexual abuse of a minor, and third-degree rape of a child in King County, according to the FBI. He was arrested by Malaysian police on Monday.

“Thanks to successful international partnerships and the FBI’s global reach, fugitives from justice can find few places to hide. This case highlights the determination of the FBI and Kirkland Police Department to hold someone accountable who is charged with harming our community’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Special Agent in Charge Donald M Voiret in yesterday’s statement. The FBI also gave a special mention to Malaysia’s police force and immigration department.

Investigation into Uchida began as early as 2018 when Kirkland police officers responded to a welfare check on a female juvenile victim, who was reportedly suffering from sexual and psychological abuse by two men inside a Seattle apartment.

One of the suspects, Thomas Edward Lee Anderson, 34, was arrested on March 11, while Uchida got away. Kirkland Police Department later requested FBI Seattle’s assistance in locating Uchida, who was thought to have fled the country.

Both men were said to have lured underage girls into apartment basements, drugging them and feeding them alcohol, as well as raping and threatening them with physical violence and firearms.

Uchida has a long criminal history including violent and threatening behavior, according to police, and was previously convicted of criminal offenses including robbery, assault, money laundering, and firearms possession.

Both were also charged with abusing underage girls from 2015 to 2017 in multiple King and Pierce County cities.
