Sad news to report this morning — the body of one of three missing friends who went on a fishing trip together over the public holiday has been recovered by rescuers. Thirty-year-old Yeu Chee Tiong’s body was found by villagers at Sungai Labi-Labi at 8:40am.

After failing to come home following the early, Monday morning fishing trip, a search team was launched early this morning to look for three friends who went fishing off of Sarawak’s Sari island.

Having set off from Lawas at 5am Monday morning, Yeu, along with friends Faruk Arina Ahmad Sabri and Mohd Amirul Bakar, made contact shortly after leaving shore, but were not heard from again.

Faruk’s wife tried to contact the trio after her husband failed to return home by 6pm, when he was expected, and the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency was contacted. A search team was then deployed at 12:20am, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Rescuers will be looking for any sign of the other two and the orange-yellow boat they were traveling on. Colleagues in nearby Brunei have been asked to also help in the operation, along with Malaysia’s Fire and Rescue Department, the Civil Defense force, and members of the public.

Officials from the MMEA have reminded members of the public who go out fishing to take precautions and prioritize their safety.
