A school in Hulu Langat, Selangor made headlines yesterday after social media furor exposed the school for segregating two sets of cups, one for Muslim students, and another for non-Muslim students.

The story first came to light after local councilman Satees Muniandy shared photos on his social media account of cups labelled murid Islam (Muslim students) and murid bukan Islam (non-Muslim students) at the primary school. The Star writes that later Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon was forced to address the issue with a statement.

He reminded the public that “national schools are for all Malaysians, and should not separate our children based on religion.” He added that the Selangor Education Department would investigate the matter.

Absolutely ridiculous. Of course, if you remember how in 2015 both the Health Ministry and the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) threw their weight of approval behind halal mineral water, the expression of reaping what you sow comes to mind.
