For the second year running, a popular briyani restaurant in George Town’s tourist-heavy Lebuh Chulia strip has been shuttered by Health Department authorities after rat droppings and dead lizards were found scattered throughout the kitchen.
Not the kind of je ne sais quoi we were hoping for, but we’re jaded, weary, and have come to expect nothing less from some of our country’s eating establishments. Remember the great pot-hole, rain-water, plate washing incident of 2018? We do.
Authorities did a spot check on Wednesday, as per Free Malaysia Today, and found that parts of the restaurant where food was being prepared were unhygienic, and ordered the shop close for two weeks to clean up its act.
Owners have three days before authorities re-visit the eatery, and if inspectors are satisfied with the cleanliness of the restaurant, they will be allowed to reopen., as per the Food Act 1983.
While this may not inspire confidence with locals who know better, the heavy rotation of visitors who will have had no idea that the restaurant suffered such health infractions will probably mean that its tables stay full.
