Police said they have arrested the person behind the “safieyillias94” Instagram account on suspicion of sexual grooming and having obscene communication with minors.
Kajang district police chief Mohd Zaid Hassan said the police were applying to remand the individual, believed to be social media influencer Safiey Illias, by today. Police made the arrest yesterday, a day after the account went live on Instagram with another person as well as two children. The two individuals were reportedly seen vaping and shaking their chests.
“Give us time to investigate the case,” Zaid told reporters today, without elaborating further. A police report was filed by a female Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia lecturer on Wednesday, he added.
During the Instagram session, the 27-year-old influencer known for selling cosmetics was filmed wearing raunchy clothing and chatting with someone known as “Pipinatasha” and the two minors known as “hadiff_othman07” and “sy.ahrul5387.”
The lecturer filed a police complaint after watching the Instagram video from her home in Bangi, Zaid said.
“Police investigation found that the host was committing an action that could be classified as obscene communication and sexual grooming involving underage children,” he said, noting that the case is classified under Section 12(1) of the Sexual Offences against Children Act 2017 (Act 792) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.”
Sexual grooming carries a maximum penalty of five years’ jail and whipping, while obscene communication carries a year’s jail sentence or a RM50,000 (US$12,000) fine.
