Two of the police officers who were arrested over the weekend for allegedly attending a party at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur may be terminated, Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department said.
The unnamed deputy superintendent and inspector were among four police officers who had gathered with nearly 30 others, including foreigners and women, at a hotel on Jalan Pinang over the weekend, possibly violating coronavirus restrictions on large gatherings. Police said that the two officers had a bad record.
“The (two police officers) deputy superintendent and the inspector had been involved in other cases of misconduct and we will recommend dismissal to the management department,” Department Director Zamri Yahya told reporters last night, adding that stern action should be taken against them since they were repeated offenders. The department was also considering taking action against the remaining two officers, he said.
According to local reports, citing unnamed sources, one of the officers was a federal police inspector with the narcotics division in Penang; another a constable stationed in Jinjang, and two were deputy superintendents from the Selangor police headquarters. One of them was suspected to be the organizer of the gathering, who allegedly booked two rooms at a nightly rate of RM500 (about US$120) and RM700 respectively, Dang Wangi police chief Mohamad Zainal Abdullah had said. The name of the hotel was not disclosed.
The gathering of 32 people included eight foreigners and 18 women aged 20 to 50, according to police, and nothing was seized from them during Sunday’s 2am raid. Twenty locals were slapped with RM2,000 fines.
The case raised questions on how hotels were still able to accept bookings during the ongoing Movement Control Order total lockdown when hotels were supposed to be shut and only accommodate those on quarantine. The police did not comment on whether they were taking action against the hotel.
