Malaysian authorities are investigating a Facebook post that joked about Nilai 3, a location in Negeri Sembilan state, being located in Selangor after celebrity Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor purportedly dodged charges of traveling interstate during a recent shopping trip.
The post went up on the N9 Radar Facebook page known for sharing traffic news on Saturday, and is currently being probed under the Communications and Multimedia Act for possibly spreading fake news. Neelofa and her husband Harris Ismail had on May 2 allegedly crossed into Negeri Sembilan from Selangor to visit a carpet store and were subsequently charged with violating COVID-19 offenses for not using the coronavirus tracing app and wearing the face mask properly.
“We would like to emphasize that Nilai 3 is under the administration of Nilai IPD in Negeri Sembilan, and not located in Selangor,” Nilai police chief Mohd Fazley Ab Rahman told the press yesterday, noting that the page administrator, who has yet to be identified, will be called for questioning soon.
Those found guilty under the communications and multimedia act face a RM50,000 (US$12.000) fine or a one-year jail term.
N9 Radar had on Saturday uploaded a Facebook post that said: “Nilai 3 is in Selangor” together with the hashtag #pembaris (#ruler) and a laughing emoji.
The post went up days after Neelofa and her husband, aka PU Riz, claimed trial over their COVID-19 related offenses. The issue regarding interstate travel was never brought to court, according to Fadzley, following the Attorney-General’s office involvement.
