Police announce suspect arrested in brutal MRT robbery and asault

Kuala Lumpur police announced today that they had apprehended a 26-year-old male suspect they believe is related to the brutal attack on an early morning Valentine’s Day female commuter.

After a CCTV clip of the vicious attack was shared across social media over the weekend, police informed the public yesterday afternoon that they had identified the suspect. Hours later, a man was arrested at his home in Taman Cheras, not far from the scene of the crime, at approximately 8pm.

Netizens were left horrified after the minute-long attack was shared online. Showing the 48-year-old victim entering the MRT elevator at 6:45am, before the sunrises and a time when the station is relatively empty, she carries a bag with her.  The male suspect follows her into the lift, and as soon as the doors close, he punches her square in the face. Grabbing her bag, he then begins to kick her, as the elevator continues to move up and down. While the victim attempts to cling to her belongings, he continues to punch and kick her furiously, eventually absconding into the dawn when the doors open.

She was treated in hospital for her injuries, and has since been released.

RapidKL, operators of the LRT, MRT, BRT, and Monorail, issued a statement yesterday to commuters informing them that security measures across stations had been stepped up, with escorts available to carparks, and plain clothes officers monitoring the situation.

The suspect will now be held in police remand until tomorrow, as authorities seek his assistance in the investigation into the assault and robbery.
