Following the suspected weekend murder of Aiman Nosri, a 27-year-old Grab driver partner, an individual has started a petition, calling on Southeast Asia’s behemoth ride-sharing app to step up safety measures for their drivers.

Frustrated at a lack of what they see as oversight when it comes to driver safety, user Synth Fatt began a Change.Org petition — now with nearly 1,900 signatures — asking that the company acknowledge the dangers faced by their drivers, including physical assaults, robberies, muggings, and now, Aiman’s death.

Aiman was last known to be dropping passengers off in the Taman Selayang neighborhood in the north of Kuala Lumpur on Thursday night.

After being unable to reach their son, his family reported him missing to police. Officers discovered his body in a nearby parking lot, upside down, head to the floor in the backseat, with what appeared to be strangulation marks on his neck.

The sudden death of the hardworking, well-liked Aiman has hit his family hard, with his uncle telling Coconuts KL that the murdered boy’s mother is finding it especially hard to accept.

He said the family is particularly upset that it took Grab until today to call and offer condolences. For three days, the family were only able to read their stand on the matter via the company’s Facebook status and statements to the media.

While the exact circumstances or motives surrounding his death remain unclear, Aiman’s family remain shocked that it took Grab three full days to personally call his grieving parents, having only contacted them to coordinate with police.

Hoping to shed light on the lack of safety measures for drivers, the petition asks that Grab acknowledge this, and implement a better screening process for passengers. This includes providing drivers with details such as a photo for facial recognition, similar to the one of drivers provided by those who hail the car service.

After repeated attempts to comment on the matter, Grab has yet to respond.
