The tragic murder of a well-liked Grab driver over the weekend has called into question driver safety, after 27-year-old Aiman Nosri was found inside his car, after his stepfather reported him missing to police.

Grab Malaysia’s country head Sean Goh expressed his and the company’s “deepest condolences for our driver partner, and his family” in a statement yesterday, adding that feedback from Aiman’s previous passengers was positive.

Goh also asked for privacy and restraint for the sake of his family, asking others to refrain from spreading unfounded information on social media platforms. While he did not elaborate, it’s no mystery that police have yet to give any motive for the well-liked driver’s murder.

Aiman was found in the backseat of his Perodua Myvi at 8:20pm, Saturday night, upside down, with his head on the floor. Police report that there were strangulation marks on his neck, but no weapons were found at the scene.

His car was found in a parking lot in Taman Selayang Makmur, a neighborhood in the north of Kuala Lumpur. Records show that his last passengers were picked up on Thursday evening from Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock in the center of the city, and later dropped off in Selayang Baru, Selangor at 9:34pm.

While passenger safety is a top of mind concern when it comes to ride-hailing apps, Aiman’s tragic death calls into question what is being done to ensure drivers are being protected as well.
