A couple caused a stir in Penang Hill after they were spotted walking about on Sunday wearing pink wristbands, resembling those worn by persons undergoing COVID-19 quarantine.
Individuals with the pink COVID-19 tag are only allowed to remove it when they’ve tested negative for the virus after completing the mandatory quarantine period of two weeks.
As it turns out, the couple’s pink tags were not remotely related to COVID-19. Instead, they were wearing entry tags to a local pet cafe in Georgetown called Corgi and The Gang.
“Based on our checks with the Health Ministry, we found that both individuals are not on the list of people under surveillance for COVID-19 quarantine. They have never been overseas,” police chief Soffian Santong said.
According to Georgetown police, authorities managed to track down the couple, identified as a 21-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, after their photo was shared on social media following their visit to Penang Hill’s car park.
The couple has also lodged a police report over photos of them being shared on various social media accounts. The police did not disclose whether they would take action on the accounts responsible for spreading misinformation.
The pair from Butterworth told the police that they visited the pet cafe earlier in the day and were given pink tags upon entry. They did not remove the tags after leaving the place since they planned on returning later in the evening.
