AirAsia will resume flights between Singapore and Malaysia for essential travels on Aug. 17 following both governments’ decision to implement the Reciprocal Green Lane, or RGL.
The low-cost carrier has scheduled daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore throughout next week, as well as flights between Singapore and Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and Ipoh. Those flights are subject to further changes from the government, according to a statement issued today. AirAsia also expects to resume its other international flights.
“The RGL might only be the first step but certainly is most important as both countries start to revive the economy,” CEO Tony Fernandes said.
The RGL will only allow about 400 Malaysians and Singaporeans to travel back and forth between both countries for essential business and official purposes.
Last week, the Foreign Affairs Ministers of Malaysia and Singapore agreed to open up the land borders for travel from Aug. 17, five months after Malaysia closed its borders on March 18 due to COVID-19. Applications for cross-border travel can be submitted to respective immigration departments from Aug. 10.
