One of the teenage makers of viral Marvel trailer parody answers our most pressing questions

This week, Malaysia was introduced to a group of teenagers living the 2018 dream: Their school video project of recreating the trailer for the latest Marvel movie went viral.

How viral?

Like millions of views viral.

Are you sure you’re not being hyperbolic Coconuts KL?

Well, the Russo brothers (directors of the latest Avengers movie) watched their work, liked it, and tweeted back asking if they were available to direct the sequel.

Damn, that’s pretty cool. I can’t even get a text back.

We sat down behind our respective screens with Aiman, who was the original poster of the group’s video clip, and asked him just how a teen in Seremban managed to go global, what camera he used, and how long does it take for some of the world’s most famous directors to notice your work (just a few days, apparently).

Introduce yourself – what’s your name and where you from?

My name is Aiman Sany bin Mohd Ikhsan. I’m currently studying A-levels at Kolej Mara Seremban.

What was your original assignment supposed to be about?

We’re just normal college seniors and classmates. We had an English class project where we had to make our own video of any topic.

All 12 of us are big fans of Marvel, and at that time, the first trailer was a big thing and we thought, “Why don’t we make a video about something we like?”

It took us about one week to film because we were busy with classes, but at the end of the week, we all gathered to compile and edit the video, which took exactly one night.

We used household objects that were readily available and the only thing we bought was the cereal.

What did you use to shoot and edit?

We used an iPhone X to record the videos, and edited it with Adobe Premier CC

How long did it take to go peak viral?

Originally we posted it on Twitter to show our friends what we had made. Suddenly, after a sea of retweets, it reached The Russo Brothers. We were so excited and at the same time anxious on what this would mean. But overall, we feel grateful that we managed to catch the attention of such great directors.

Other than the Russo brothers giving you a shout-out — what have been the best Twitter reactions?

The best reaction we got besides the Russo Brothers was from Benedict Wong, when he posed with plates. We also got a few memes of fake Dr Strange.

How do you feel about the state of creativity online right now? Is Malaysia ready for a new wave of content makers?

Content online is pretty much the same: a lot of makeup tutorials and vlogs.

Even parodies are pretty common.

I think what made ours unique was that it was unusually funny because we used household items.

Not just that!! Your timing was impeccable. What kind of stuff do you like to read or watch online?

Personally, I like to read and watch about scientific things like inventions, or new discoveries.

Science? Cool. Honestly, this gives us great hope for our future creatives
