Men vs wild: Butterworth Civil Defence Department’s epic battle with aggresive 5m python

Over the past couple of weeks, residents of Merbau Kudung in Butterworth have been living in fear of a five-meter python, which has been lurking at a swamp near the neighbourhood.

When members of the Civil Defence Department (APM) arrived to remove the reptile on Monday, the residents thought that their nightmare was over.

But the residents were forced to watch in horror as the 60kg python suddenly turned aggresive as they were trying to remove it from the swamp.

According to The New Straits Times, the giant reptile reportedly reared its head and attacked the team as the APM personnel scrambled away to avoid being bitten, while struggling to pin its massive body down.

The epic battle reportedly lasted 30 minutes before the team finally captured the python.

“The python kept wriggling to avoid being captured, and this gave our APM members a difficult time.

“Tension rose when it tried to attack our five members.

“But our team managed to subdue the snake with help from residents,” APM Kepala Batas unit chief Hamdiah Shahamudin was quoted by the daily as saying.

Hamdiah told the daily that the animal has been sent to the Wildlife Department for temporary sanctuary.
