Bystanders in the Butterworth area of Penang were shocked yesterday morning when a man suddenly fell out of a third-floor block of flats in the Mak Mandin neighborhood. Luckily, the man had his fall broken by a Proton Saga below, and escaped with no injuries.

Police report that the 33-year-old man suffers from mental illness, and was seen walking around the neighborhood hours earlier. Residents reported him, and he was picked up by authorities and sent back to him some at 12:30am. Upon reaching his residence, he ran upstairs, and suddenly jumped from the window. He later told police that a voice of a child told him to jump.

Doctors at a nearby hospital later examined the man, but thankfully found no visible injuries.

Relatives later spoke to police, and revealed that the man had a history with mental illness, but posed no threat to others.

Mental illness affects approximately 40% of Malaysians at some point during their life, with doctors expecting these numbers to continue rising. Need to speak to someone about your, or a loved-one’s, mental health? Contact the Malaysian Mental Health Association for support.
