Rangers from the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) placed a man under arrest in Gopeng, Perak after he was seen riding around on his motorcycle carrying the carcass of an obviously endangered tiger.
You would think he’d cover a tiger carcass with a plastic tarp or something before going for a spin around the pekan.
Perhilitan rangers were alerted at 11am yesterday to the death of a tiger near Gopeng’s Orang Asli settlement, and were dispatched to investigate the incident.
When they arrived in Gopeng, they discovered the tiger’s remains had been removed from the scene of its death.
Perak Perhilitan director Rozidan Md Yasin told the New Straits Times Online‘s Rahmat Khairulrijal that the suspect, who is in his 40s, was believed to have taken the carcass for his own undisclosed purposes.
The tiger, believed to have died after being ensnared in a trap in the area, belongs to the Panthera Tigris species, which is classified as endangered and protected under Malaysian law.
The case is being investigated under Section 68(2)(c) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). If convicted, the suspect could face up to five years’ jail or a maximum fine of RM500,000.
Because paying half a million bucks sounds about right for taking a dead king of the jungle out for a joyride.
