Malaysians living without water in Selangor state have turned to Netflix show Emily in Paris for some comic relief while waiting for supply to be fully restored Friday.
Photos of actress Lily Collins, who plays Emily in the popular chick flick, superimposed against a backdrop of Malaysians lining up in front of water trucks are making their rounds online after water supply to over a million homes was cut yesterday due to pollution.
The state’s water agency Air Selangor said today that water supply has been restored to only 162 out of the more than 1,292 affected locations, but expects it to be fully restored by Friday.
“Since 9am today, water supply has been fully restored to 162 out of 1,292 areas (13%) affected by the unscheduled water disruption. Meanwhile, we’re in the process of restoring water supply to the remaining 1,130 affected areas,” its statement said.

The disruption affected Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat, among others. Residents in those areas have also been sharing photos of neighbors carrying pails and lining up in front of water trucks outside their homes.

According to Air Selangor, which also manages water supply for Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, housing areas like Taman Melor Jaya in Klang and Kayangan Heights in Petaling are no longer affected by the water disruption. However, the remaining 1,130 affected areas will have water gradually restored in the coming days with University Malaya in Petaling and Solaris Mont Kiara in Kuala Lumpur among the last locations to have water again.
The “unscheduled water disruption” began yesterday after pollution was detected at the Sungai Selangor river. Investigations into the source of the pollution is underway but police suspect that it could be related to the incident that led to September’s water disruption.
Just two months ago, water supply throughout Selangor was cut off due to pollution at the Sungai Gong river linked to illegally operated factories, and once again over the weekend due to a burst pipe.
