Age is just a number for some romantics, including a member of the United Malays National Organization, or UMNO, who tied the knot a second time with a man 34 years her junior.

Zaleha Bujang, 62, who leads UMNO’s women’s group in Malacca’s Jasin district, married businessman Muhammad Asyraf Daniel, 28, in an intimate ceremony at the religious office on Friday. She told reporters yesterday that they met several years ago at the house of an unnamed politician. They grew close during last year’s Cameron Highlands by-election won by UMNO candidate Ramli Mohd Nor.

Alhamdulillah, our wedding ceremony went smoothly even though there were a couple of hiccups, including family members who disapproved of our marriage due to the age gap,” Asyraf said yesterday.

Zaleha was previously married to a man named Ahmad Sujan, who passed away five years ago. They have three children together.

“I told [the children] that I was feeling lonely and they finally agreed that I should remarry,” Zaleha said. The newlyweds plan to spend their honeymoon in Cameron Highlands and expressed hopes of adopting children in the future.

“I don’t think I am able to conceive, but we wish to adopt a child to brighten up our lives,” Zaleha said.
