Looking for a dash of sedition in your fashion? A PJ mall has the answer in a tote bag

If you’re looking for the next Malaysian revolution, it might just be starting at a PJ mall.

To be honest, where else would you expect it other than in a sweet, air conditioned paradise, more than likely containing a Dunkin Donuts?

Last week, mall-goers at a local shopping complex were given the opportunity to express their political views with an edgy tote bag, captioned “Perdana Menteri Saya Memalukan,” translating to “My Prime Minister is Embarrassing.” Those are fighting words!

Suggested donation for a one-way ticket to sedition? RM10. Bargain.

Unfortunately for the bag seller, an executive member of Subang Umno Youth, Alan Ridzuan, happened to be strolling through the mall, and saw the bags. A police report soon followed, with Alan urging authorities to investigate the person behind the bag sales.

The mall in question apologized, and said that the bag was part of a weekend “artisinal bazaar,” and they would help authorities track down the makers of the tote.

Word quickly spread over social media regarding the bag sales, and like the Malaysian political landscape, opinions were diametrically opposed on the bags.

On one hand, there were those that asked what was wrong with having an opinion, and arguably, how much damage a tote bag could do.

Then there were the others that said that anyone with enough gumption to slander the PM, our country’s leader, “didn’t deserve to be Malaysian.”

Easy, now. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. No need to revoke passports just yet.

Just remember – the bag also has a tiny addendum: Saya sayang dan sokong Perdana Menteri. Translation: I love and support the Prime Minister.

The world is wild, kids.
