Flames raged through the night at the renowned luxury resort Andaman on Langkawi island while the rest of Malaysia prepares to enter another round of lockdowns.
A fire broke out at the 178-room beach resort by Landmarks Berhad on Tuesday afternoon followed by another fire in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, turning one of Malaysia’s most popular tourist destinations into a spooky house in just one night. It took firefighters more than 12 hours to finally bring the blaze under control at 1pm yesterday. No major injuries were reported by the resort management today.
“All guests have been safely relocated to our sister property with no major injuries reported by any guests or associates,” it said. The Datai sister hotel is a six minutes’ drive away. The management did not say how many people were at its premises when the incident took place.
“Our hotel will be temporarily closed and will not be accepting new reservations till further notice,” it added.
Investigations are underway to find out the cause of the fire, which severely damaged the kitchen, lobby, and dining area, among others, covering them in soot.
An unnamed firefighter from the Kedah Fire Department told reporters that the first incident broke out at 4pm Tuesday and was resolved at 10pm. They were alerted to the second fire after midnight.
“The night’s strong winds fanned the flames, which almost engulfed the entire block of the building,” he was quoted as saying.
