Benzoyl peroxide: the topical ointment beloved by spotty teenagers everywhere, is also found in a host of other products. Did you know that it can bleach your hair, teeth, sheets (if you sleep with acne cream on your face), and also flour?

Yes, the lily-white bread you are eating has had its wheat bleached to look oh-so perfect for picky consumers. Eating bleach is totally cool though, says Ministry of Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. The MOH has been monitoring over 200 flour samples since 2014, and all comply with regulations.

Panic had spread via social media when the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) made claims that the chemical in flour could affect health.

Noor Hisham clarified that many of the expensive, imported flours you can buy here from Japan the United States, Australia and New Zealand, all use of benzoyl peroxide, there’s yet to be a link to any health hazard.

Word. You’ve heard it from the Ministry of Health. Bleach your hair. Bleach your teeth. Bleach your food. Everything in moderation.
