Group of men force convenience store to remove beer from shelves

New government, same ‘ol NGO antics: A convenience store in the state of Perak was the unlikely venue for a protest organized by Jabat, a group that seemingly has taken issue with the sale of alcohol in the Muslim-majority area.

Last week, the group flooded into the township of Manjoi, and called for the local convenience store staff empty the fridge of all alcohol. The fridge was labeled as non-halal, but this was of little interest to the group, who debated the sanctity of buying a proverbial packet of crisps from a shop that also sold Heineken. The group decided that it was not in keeping with their reading of Islam, and ensured that nary a can was left in the fridge.

While the group stopped short of destroying any cans a la Jamal Yunos, they did take the liberty of depriving the area’s non-Muslim residents of purchasing alcohol.

Netizens were divided on the matter, with some calling the actions inconsiderate of those in the area that were not Muslim, and simply wanted a cold beer on a hot day, whereas others pointed out that many local townspeople had asked the shop to cease alcohol sales to no avail.

A member of the mob said that they were recording the entire incident as proof that they did not use physical violence towards any shop employees over the matter, they did say that they would smash the beer if the employees did not comply.

No word on if the men were aware that the last beer-smashing stunt of note ended with the leader of the debacle being charged with being a public nuisance.

The group then went to a local police station to lodge a report over the sale of alcohol, which is a bit too carriage-before-the-horse for our liking, but WHO ARE WE TO JUDGE THE PERSONAL DECISIONS OF OTHERS no matter how legally unsound their motives are? Ahem.
