Govt not sorry for passing controversial laws: PM Najib Razak

Despite receiving heavy criticisms from many quarters, Prime Minister Najib Razak said the government will not apologise for passing several controversial laws.

According to theSun, Najib said security laws such as the National Security Council Act were necessary to safeguard the country from increasing terrorism threat in the region.

“In our region, Jakarta was hit in January, and I have said repeatedly that we are far from immune to this danger in Malaysia.

“This is why the government passed the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act or Sosma, the Special Measures against Terrorism in Foreign Countries Act, the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the National Security Council Act.

“We were criticised for passing some of these laws. But my government will never apologise for placing the safety and security of the Malaysian people first,” he was quoted as saying during his keynote address at the official opening of the 36th Aseanapol Conference 2016 in Putrajaya.

However, despite passing such laws, the measures put in place by the government is not 100 per cent foolproof from terrorism activities, Najib added.

“I can assure you that the government will continue to put all necessary measures in place, and that the security forces are on a heightened state of alert,” he was further quoted by theSun as saying.
