Water levels in Seremban rose to more than two meters after Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced that the area in the Negeri Sembilan state would re-enter a two-week lockdown tomorrow through to Nov. 18.
Flash floods hit at least nine areas including housing areas Happy Garden and the Datuk Mansor Village during the heavy downpour that lasted four hours from midnight. More than 500 residents have so far been evacuated to temporary shelters.
“Poor Seremban people. They’re already in the COVID-19 red zone, and now there’s a flood to deal with too,” Twitter user @Nzkhmk, who was among hundreds who showed concern for the area online, said. The Negeri Sembilan city has been struck by new waves of COVID-19 infections, reporting 1,702 new cases since the outbreak began in February, joining other locked down areas Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, and parts of Sabah.
More than 600,000 people living in Seremban would not be allowed to leave the district during the lockdown and business hours would be restricted.
Scenes of the floods that were posted online showed cars and homes nearly fully submerged in water and people wading through flood water or paddling around on makeshift boats. Floods tend to happen in Seremban and the last time the area was struck by floods of this scale was just four months ago.
