Family members of Malaysia’s first Zika patient given all-clear

Phew, that was a close call.

The family members of the first Zika patient in Malaysia have been given the all-clear, reports The Star Online.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told the news portal that the blood samples taken from three family members returned negative.

In a separate incident, blood samples were also reportedly taken from another family of three from Malacca.

The family was initially suspected of being infected with Zika virus after rumours swirled on social media that they were placed in quarantine after returning home from Singapore on August 30.

“And urine samples taken from three family members in Malacca (who recently returned from Singapore) were also found to be negative,” Dr Noor Hisham was quoted as saying.

Last Thursday, a 58-year-old woman from Bandar Botanic in Klang became the first Malaysian to have contracted the Zika virus after she reportedly visited her daughter in Singapore.

To date, six Malaysians residing or working in Singapore are reportedly confirmed to be infected with the airborne virus, according to Singapore’s Ministry of Health.
