Investigators believe a faulty brake may be to blame for a deadly express bus accident that occurred yesterday near the Karak Highway in Gombak yesterday.

One passenger died, and 36 were injured after the bus flipped onto its side at kilometer 33.3 after hitting the barrier on its way from Jerantut, Pahang to Shah Alam at 6:30pm. The trip between the town to Kuala Lumpur suburb is approximately three hours.

Traveling downhill in the middle lane, the coach, carrying 40 passengers, was unable to avoid a car in front and instead collided with the barrier.

Meanwhile, police have named the deceased as 35-year-old Emylia Md Zaki, from Jerantut. Her body was found trapped between her seat in the middle part of the bus, and the vehicle wreckage. She was traveling with her husband and two sons, who remained largely unharmed by the incident.

Thirty-six passengers received medical attention at nearby hospitals, though none of these injuries have been reported to be serious.

Police have detained the driver of the bus, a 24-year-old from Jengka, Pahang, and have taken both urine and blood samples while they investigate the circumstances of the crash further.

The Karak highway and surrounding area, is mountainous, with sharp curves through the hills. At times, driver visibility can be quite poor due to foggy weather. It was the site of Malaysia’s most deadly traffic accident, a 1990 multi-car pile-up that resulted in the deaths of 17 individuals.
