Cat attends Malaysian court hearing in abuse case involving owner

There’s an online movement calling for justice for a cat named Baby, who attended court yesterday acting as evidence in a case of animal abuse by its owner.

The owner of the black and white feline has claimed trial for the case, in which he was accused of hurling a sharp metal object at the cat in November, paralyzing its hind legs. Retiree Cosmos Chong Say Hun, 79, pleaded not guilty to committing animal cruelty and was released without bail.

Hundreds have been posting to Twitter with the hashtag  #JusticeForBaby

“The cutest witness in the history of Malaysia’s courts,” a star-struck @Frdsh_ wrote on Twitter, adding: “Do not tolerate animal abuse! #JusticeForBaby.”

“Poor lovely baby,” @Mibloops wrote online.

Photos of the female cat at the court in Penang as evidence “C1” quickly spread online yesterday. One showed the cat sitting in a cage while another showed a court official carrying it. Baby was brought into the courtroom as proof of animal abuse and was under the care of the local veterinary department.

Chong reportedly hurled an object measuring 3.5 feet at the animal. If found guilty, he could be fined up to RM100,000 (US$24,000) and jailed for three years.

He was expected to return to court on April 19.
