Brace yourselves for daily thunderstorms, Malaysians!

Brace yourselves, folks; heavy rain is here.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a statement cited by The Star Online that thunderstorms and heavy rains are expected throughout the country this week.

Most states in peninsular Malaysia are forecasted to receive isolated or scattered thunderstorms almost daily, the Met Department said in the statement.

Isolated rains are also expected to hit Sabah as well as west and central Sarawak, the Department added.

According to the Met Department, the west coast of the peninsula is expected to record more than 1,000mm of rainfall this month alone.

In comparison, the west coast reportedly recorded a total of 1,200mm of rainfall between January and November this year.

Meanwhile, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department has advised the public against taking the heavy rains and high tide lightly.

Its assistant director (operations) Yusri Mohd Yusoff told The Star Online in a seperate report that high tide coupled with heavy rain will result in strong currents and unpredictable water flow in rivers or drains.

“This is also the north-east monsoon period. Flash floods can occur because the water might not be able to flow out quickly into the sea due to high tide.

“Children are advised not to play near rivers. They can be swept away easily if they fall during the rainy season,” he was quoted as saying.
