A 52-year-old Malaysian man’s alleged attempt to smuggle cigarettes inside several loaves of Gardenia bread was thwarted by eagle-eyed Singaporean border officials at the Woodlands Checkpoint this week as he tried to enter the city-state by bus.
Having noticed the man in line at the Arrival Bus Hall, the Singaporean Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) grew suspicious of the man’s plastic bags filled with the notoriously insipid bread [Ed. Note: Gardenia bread sucks the life out of our carb-loving soul. FIGHT US.], and asked him to step to the side.
Upon examining his bags, ICA officials found 32 unopened packets of cigarettes neatly tucked into the slices of bread, which had been re-bagged with that extra bit of nicotine-y goodness.

Officials, however, were not impressed.
“This method of concealment is a cause for concern as similar methods may be used by people with ill intent to smuggle security items into Singapore,” a spokesperson for ICA said.
“The ICA will continue to conduct security checks on passengers and vehicles so as to safeguard Singapore’s security.”
Well, it’s no heroin-inside-a-durian, but an ‘A’ for effort. The man has since been referred to Customs authorities for further investigation.
