Police yesterday arrested 76 people for allegedly partying at a house in Johor’s Kluang district without practicing social distancing. Three of them were also suspected of possessing drugs.
The group of 56 men and 20 women, all between the ages of 15 and 35, were arrested at 1:30am on Sunday as part of the Operasi Pesta Liar (Wild Party Operation) police operation, chief Mohd Abduh Ismail told the press yesterday. He added that the police had heard loud music and that the group did not immediately notice that the police had arrived.
Three speakers, a set of PA system equalizers and a laptop were also seized. Drugs were then found during a body search.
“During the body search, police found some illegal substances on three men, namely one plastic packet suspected of containing ketamine weighing 1.85g, one packet of marijuana weighing 1.8g and 21 ecstasy pills,” Mohd Abduh said.
Thirty-eight of them later tested positive for drugs and are in police custody.
The police chief also said that each person was charged RM30 (US$7) to enter the party on Jalan Delima, a homestay rented for the purposes of the event.
For breaching safe distancing measures, all of them may each face a fine of up to RM1,000 and a six-month jail term.
Malaysia has allowed gatherings to take place again since its lockdown but limited to 20 people at home and no more than 250 at public events.
