PM Najib: Malaysia doesn’t need gay pride parades

Prime Minister Najib Razak, in an oblique response to the landmark civil rights United States Supreme Court ruling last week that legalised gay marriage, said that Malaysia is no place for gay pride parades.

Describing Malaysia as a moderate Muslim nation, Najib said the concept of a gay pride parade on Malaysian soil would be too extreme for local society, on par with fundamentalist religious violence, such as that espoused by Islamic State.

“Islam is a religion that promotes peace. Islam does not promote violence and teaches us moderation. It is not extreme nor it is too open (sic).

“There is no need for events like a gay parade because it is too open,” he said today, as quoted by Kamles Kumar of The Malay Mail Online.

Earlier, before a breaking fast event in KL’s Police Training Centre (Pulapol), Najib stated that “deviant cultures” were slowly encroaching into the Malaysian way of life, but did not elaborate on which cultures he referred to.
