Police have launched an investigation into a potential breach of COVID-19 measures at the wedding of TV personality Noor Neelofa over the weekend.

Neelofa tied the knot with Muslim televangelist Harris Ismail, aka PU Riz, at the Grand Hyatt in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday in front of nearly 200 people, some of whom were photographed without socially distancing as per coronavirus safety measures.

“We have begun investigation into suspected violations of the Covid-19 SOP under Section 21A of Act 342 (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases),” Dang Wangi police spokesperson Mohamad Zainal Abdullah told reporters yesterday, noting that representatives from the hotel and the wedding’s organizer will be called for questioning.

Those who violate COVID-19 protocols face a fine of up to RM10,000 (US$2,500).

Neelofa’s highly anticipated wedding was attended by family members, celebrities such as TV host Shalma Ainaa, and even the Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri. Photos of guests sitting closely with each other had sparked online uproar. Some were also photographed without their masks on.

“I’m sorry, expect a cluster [from] this wedding,” Twitter user @Azrulmohdkhalib wrote yesterday, expressing his “shock” at the “blatant disregard” for COVID-19 measures.

Another Twitter user, @Bigsnorlax1985, asked whether Neelofa was receiving “special treatment.”

Neither the hotel nor wedding planner Reka Teemor immediately responded to Coconuts’ request for comment.
