A laundry basket is a laundry basket right? You put dirty laundry in it and you carry it to the washing machine or carry clean laundry away from it.

Well, you can be sure it’s not JUST a laundry basket if it’s by IKEA. Because IKEA’s TORKIS laundry basket is really something else.

Like all IKEA products, the design began with you, the user, in mind. First, it has to be practical. And yes, TORKIS is great as a laundry basket. It is easy to carry around and strong enough to handle a heavy load of wet clothes. But that’s just being obvious.

IKEA is all about finding creative ways to use its items. And that’s why we Malaysians love IKEA, right? Just take a look around your home, you’re sure to find some item you’ve re-purposed creatively! Cos that’s how we roll, beb!

So, the guys at IKEA’s design and development department decided against making a laundry basket that’s just simply laundry basket-shaped. They thought that giving the TORKIS laundry basket a wide, oval shape and soft plastic frame could inspire you to get more out of it. It certainly does open up lots of possibilities.

You could use the TORKIS laundry basket as the perfect tub to wash your pet. Or your kid’s school shoes. You could even use it as an unexpected toy. The thorough testing process at design HQ included carrying a 90-kilo designer around the office (you know, in case your kids really do get that idea into their heads.)

The TORKIS laundry basket easily carries that kind of weight. It not only didn’t break, but it even felt comfortable – for both the carriers and the guy being carried. It had to be, or else IKEA wouldn’t dare show you that video!
