Even the pandemic and state of emergency can’t stop Michelin-starred UK chef Gordon Ramsay from opening his first restaurant in Malaysia.
Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill will open its first Malaysian outlet in June, at Sunway Resort, Selangor. According to Sunway Resort’s website, the restaurant will offer a “varied all-day menu” which includes snacks and light bites, as well as Gordon Ramsay’s signature dishes beef wellington, and sticky toffee pudding.
The restaurant has not yet responded to Coconuts’ email request for comment on why it is opening in the middle of a pandemic in Malaysia. The second lockdown that starts today has also prohibited food and beverage outlets from welcoming customers to dine in. Hotels can continue to operate as normal.
Ramsay has opened a variety of restaurants in Southeast Asia, including casual British diner Bread Street Kitchen at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. The 54-year-old Hell’s Kitchen star was forced to close three of his Hong Kong restaurants in April last year.
Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill in Kuala Lumpur will be located at the lobby level of Sunway Resort. Guests can enjoy floor-to-ceiling window views of the lagoon outside.
On Sunway Resort’s Facebook page, social media users seem excited at the opening and left comments on the hotel’s post announcing the restaurant today.
“I’m not even interested in the food, I just wanna go there and get yelled by him AHAHAHAH,” Facebook user Shuet Yee wrote.
“Can we have Hell’s Kitchen Malaysia? Would be fun to watch that live,” fellow user Sean Ong chimed in.
Kuala Lumpur and five states Penang, Selangor, Johor, Sabah and Melaka were placed under the Movement Control Order for two weeks starting today. A state of emergency was also declared by the king and will last until August or when the coronavirus has been brought under control.
