Offside: KL watched the World Cup Final at Dataran Merdeka, and this happened

It was a big deal: newly reopened since major upgrading works began more than six months ago, Dataran Merdeka was the venue playing host to Malaysia’s World Cup Final party. (We weren’t competing in the World Cup, of course, but you know how Malaysians get about the World Cup.) It was going to be the iconic square’s coming out party for 2014.

Even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and National Biggest Football Fan (and Youth and Sports Minister) Khairy Jamaluddin turned up to Dataran Merdeka to watch the final between Germany (who won, yay) and Argentina (who lost, sorry Messi) on the giant TV screen set up for the occasion.

That’s all well and good. Great, even. But then this happened:

Really, KL? You wait half a year for the centrepiece of what makes KL look like KL to reopen, and then you dump tons of trash on it over the course of a single night? Shame on us.

Anyone who got upset over Datuk Bung Mokhtar’s tweet bigging up Adolf Hitler for Germany’s win over Brazil in the semi-final, and yet went to Dataran Merdeka to contribute to this sorry mess, should consider themselves hypocrites. This is just as embarrassing, and stinks just as bad.
