Woman returns stolen kitten to Tai Po shop, says she ‘thought it was a stray’

Three days after it was taken from his home, a tiny three-month-old kitten has been returned to his owners, thanks to an online plea for his whereabouts which went viral earlier this week.

The kit-napper, a 52-year-old woman surnamed Lam, brought the three-month-old moggy back to his home, a dried seafood store, at 10am today. She told the cat’s owners that she “thought [he] was a stray” and didn’t realise he had owners until the story was reported in local newspapers, according to Apple Daily.

Lam was reportedly arrested on suspicion of theft and is being investigated by police officers from Tai Po’s crime unit.

On Tuesday, a Tai Po resident surnamed Ng appealed to Facebook users to identify a woman who was seen playing with the cat of the dried seafood store, and taking it away in her bag.

It was shared widely by Hong Kong netizens who lambasted Lam for her actions and speculated that she may have been behind other recent Tai Po cat kidnappings.
