Woman jailed for 6 days for attacking examiner after failing driving test

A woman has been jailed for six days after she attacked a driving test examiner by hitting him with her phone because he failed her.

Wang Meijuan, 45, pleaded guilty to one count of common assault at Eastern Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Apple Daily reports.

The case was first reported last month when Wang lashed out at the male driving examiner after she failed her driving test in Aberdeen on December 5.

Apple Daily reported that Wang, upset with the result, shouted at the examiner, stood in front of his car as he tried to drive away, then, when he opened the door, she threw her phone at him.

The examiner was taken to hospital with injuries to his right arm and Wang was arrested.

Her attorney told the court that Wang just wanted to pay a fine rather than serve time since she comes from mainland, is not familiar with Hong Kong laws and had acted on impulse.

But principal magistrate Peter Law Tak-chuen wasn’t buying the defense, saying that the offense was severe because she attacked a public official, Sing Tao Daily reports.

Law stressed that driving test examiners ensure public safety on the city’s roads by making sure candidates are fit to drive, therefore they had to be strict when examining candidates.

He also dismissed the argument from Wang’s defense that it was a simply a private dispute, adding that Wang should have known what the responsibility of the examiner was as she was university-educated businesswoman.

He added that, although this was the defendant’s first offense, a six-day stint prison sentence was appropriate.
