The trailer for an upcoming Netflix documentary on Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong was released earlier today. “Joshua: Teenager vs. Superpower”, which scooped up the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, will be premiering on the streaming platform on May 26.

The two-minute-long trailer charts Wong’s career from 2012 (when he was a mere 14 years old) to the mass 2014 Occupy rallies that made him a household name, to the present day. Directed by American filmmaker Joe Piscatella, the documentary features a mix of original footage, news footage, videos from social media, and clips submitted by protesters.

The official synopsis reads: “When the Chinese Communist Party alters its promise of autonomy to Hong Kong – handed back to the Chinese government from British rule in 1997 – teenager Joshua Wong decides to fight for his homeland.  Rallying thousands of kids to skip school and occupy the streets, and without a long-term plan but with passion to spare, Joshua becomes an unlikely leader in Hong Kong. A remarkable portrait of courage, resilience, and the propulsive power of youthful idealism, Joshua: Teenager vs Superpower, the winner of this year’s Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, is a chronicle of one young man risking his own future for a greater good.”

Upon its premiere in January, the doc was hailed as “riveting” by The Verge, and “the rare protest documentary that’s genuinely exciting as well as inspiring” by Hollywood trade publication Variety.
