It was a close call for one driver whose van flipped onto its side in the middle of a wet, busy road in Kowloon this morning and narrowly avoided being slammed into by oncoming traffic.
Dash cam video posted online shows the gray van — which was driving along Kwai Chung Road — reach the intersection to join Lai Chi Kok Road, but instead of merging, it drives across the lane, clips a curb, and flips onto its side, sliding into oncoming traffic and barely missing a taxi. The vehicle from which the footage was taken slams on the brakes, stopping in time to barely tap the overturned van, rather than plow into it at speed.
According to the timestamp, the incident happened just before 11am. Parts of Lai Chi Kok Road were closed as a result, but a Transport Department alert confirmed at 12:10pm that it has now reopened.
The incident was the second traffic accident at the exact same junction in as many days.
Apple Daily reports that at about 1:30pm on Monday, another gray van driving along Kwai Chung Road at the Lai Chi Kok intersection rammed through the sidewalk’s metal railings and smashed into a set of stairs leading to an overhead footbridge.
One female pedestrian was sent to Caritas Medical Centre after breaking her leg in the incident. The driver was initially trapped in the vehicle but was extricated by first responders. He was unscathed and did not require medical treatment.
Yesterday, 10 people in a different traffic accident in Aberdeen were sent to hospital after a taxi slammed into pedestrians on a traffic island.
