In a video produced by British news network Channel 4, a man who claims to be a triad member says that the gangs have been paid by the Chinese Communist Party to disrupt the Umbrella Movement.
He also claims that the triads have a “relationship” with officials and the police, with the latter turning a blind eye to their actions. He believes 50 triad members were paid to break a LegCo building window on Nov. 19, which was arguably the first violent incident on the part of protesters.
The man explains that to the triads, it’s not political: it’s a job. They’re doing it for money and because they were ordered too – not because they’re trying to help the government.
Jimmy Lai, also interviewed in the video, said that he also believes these violent protesters have a “hidden agenda” of trying to destroy the movement’s reputation. He added that he thinks it’s time for protesters to retreat.
