Suspected armed robber falls out window to his death after police arrive at his flat

A man suspected of attempted robbery fell to his death after police went to his Wong Tai Sin flat in the early hours of today.

The 35-year-old suspect, surnamed Cheung, was tracked down to his family home on Chuk Yuen North Estate by police at around midnight, Apple Daily reports. After entering the flat, officers were refused access to Cheung’s room after he locked the door.

When they finally broke the door down, police found the room empty and the window open. Officers who were outside the building found the suspect lying unconscious on the ground and declared him dead at the scene.

It is not clear at the time if Cheung’s death was an accident.

Police were investigating the 35-year-old in relation to an attempted robbery that took place at 10:30am yesterday morning, at a Western Union shop at 240-252 Nathan Road.

According to staff, a masked man approached the counter and slid a note over to the cashier which read, “robbery, I have a gun”. When the cashier refused, the man placed what appeared to be a pistol on the counter, but left after the cashier sounded the alarm.

After searching Cheung’s room this morning, police seized clothes that visually match the robber’s outfit, and what they believe to be a fake gun.

Local media outlets report that Cheung used to be a cook, but had been unemployed for about half a year. According to Apple Daily’s undisclosed sources, Cheung had gone bankrupt last year after accruing tens of thousands of dollars in gambling debt.
