The 48-year-old man suspected of raping and robbing a 22-year-old woman under a bridge in Kwun Tong has died after committing suicide in his jail cell earlier today, reports say.
According to Oriental Daily, the suspect, surnamed Lam, was found unconscious in his jail cell in Sau Mau Ping Police Station at around 9am today. He was rushed to United Christian Hospital in a coma but was reported dead at around 10:30am.
Police sources told Apple Daily that the suspect hanged himself in his cell.
Lam was arrested early yesterday morning in relation to the highly publicized rape and robbery of a young woman on Sunday morning. Police located him after he attempted to use the victim’s stolen bank card at an ATM in Lam Tin.
Lam was reported to have an extensive criminal record for acts of theft and robbery. After escorting Lam to his home at Sau Mau Ping Estate yesterday, police seized some wet items of clothing and three smartphones, two of which were iPhones, as evidence. It is unclear whether the suspect was trying to remove the DNA evidence by washing the clothes he had worn during the crime.
This story is still developing.
